Dry Brushing for Cellulite: Does it Work?

Treatments / January 31, 2022

Understanding cellulite is the first step in understanding why a treatment will or will not work. Allegro Medspa of Santa Rosa was one of the first practices in the United States to offer QWO injections for cellulite. Since early 2021, our expert injection technicians have helped women across the state lessen the appearance of cellulite in the buttocks. But what about other methods, like dry brushing for cellulite or products advertised to clear the dimples and lumps?

We’re happy to answer the question up front: Dry brushing for cellulite **does not work**!

Zero over-the-counter treatments have shown any improvement in cellulite, whether it’s brushing or creams containing caffeine, antioxidants, or herbal supplements. Massaging does not affect cellulite and neither do skin wraps.

What causes cellulite?

When fibrous connective cords that act as tethers between skin and the muscle underneath break, stretch, or pull and fat cells accumulate to push against the skin, cellulite forms. Cellulite can affect anyone, but women are more likely to have it. It isn’t clear why some people develop cellulite while others don’t, though evidence suggests genetics play a role. Cellulite is not caused by toxins or by being overweight, though it can be more apparent in people who are overweight.

Cellulite is not harmful in any way to your health, but the appearance of it bothers many people who have it. That’s why so many companies try to cash in on that insecurity by offering products marketed to improve cellulite, regardless of how accurate those statements are.

QWO, a breakthrough cellulite treatment

Unlike our other options for nonsurgical body contouring in Santa Rosa, QWO (collagenase clostridium histolyticum-aaes) is an injectable treatment for cellulite in adult women. It is a prescription medicine and FDA-approved to treat moderate to severe cellulite in the buttocks.

Our Northern California med spa was one of the first in the nation to be able to offer QWO injections for cellulite. With help from our trained injection technicians, women across the region are flaunting their summer bodies in cheeky swimsuits with no concern about cellulite all summer long!

How does QWO work?

The enzymes that make up QWO are thought to target structural causes of cellulite beneath the skin. QWO releases the thickened fibrous bands, redistributes fat cells, and stimulates collagen growth. The additional collagen production means your summer body will keep improving over time!
