Dysport®

Offered at our convenient location in Sonoma County, CA

Dysport is a fast-acting injectable neuromodulator, similar to Botox, that is proven to help smooth the frown lines between the eyebrows. It is made up of botulinum toxin, a neuromodulator that safely relaxes the facial muscles that cause the formation and continued visibility of wrinkles. This treatment can smooth the skin on the face and prevent the formation of new or deeper wrinkles.

About Dysport

Facial expression begins with the contraction of facial muscles, which causes the skin to stretch dynamically. The skin of a young and healthy person can bounce back from these temporary expressions unscathed. But as we grow older, our skin becomes less resilient. Everyday facial movements begin to take a toll, and the face begins to show a record of wear and tear. This causes more prominent fine lines and wrinkling on the forehead, and between the eyebrows when we make expressions.

By addressing the root cause, the contraction of muscles, injectable neuromodulators can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. (1) For years, Botox has been the industry standard for this type of treatment, but alternative treatments like Dysport provide equally effective results.

How is Dysport Different from Botox?

Both Dysport and Botox are botulinum toxin formulations that block muscle contractions by inhibiting the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Their differences are subtle but important.

  •  Active Ingredient: The active ingredient in Dysport is abobotulinumtoxinA, while the active ingredient in Botox is onabotulinumtoxinA. Both are forms of botulinum toxin type A, but they have slight differences in their molecular structures.
  • Onset of Action: Dysport tends to have a slightly faster onset of action compared to Botox. Some patients may notice results from Dysport within a few days, whereas Botox typically takes around 4 to 7 days to show full effects.
  • Spread of Effect: Dysport has a broader spread of effect compared to Botox, meaning it may diffuse to a wider area after injection. This can be an advantage for treating larger areas, such as forehead wrinkles, but it may require more precise injection techniques to avoid unintended effects in surrounding areas.
  • Dosage Differences: The dosing units for Dysport and Botox are not interchangeable because they are different formulations with different potencies. The ratio of Dysport to Botox units is typically around 2.5 to 3 units of Dysport for every 1 unit of Botox, although this can vary depending on the area being treated and the individual patient.
  • Duration of Effect: Both Dysport and Botox provide temporary results, with effects lasting approximately 3 to 6 months on average. However, individual responses may vary, and factors such as metabolism, muscle strength, and treatment area can influence the duration of effect for each patient.

Who is a Candidate for Dysport?

If you have prominent lines between your eyebrows, crow’s feet around your eyes, or forehead wrinkles, Dysport could be the perfect solution. An ideal candidate will be in relatively good health with no severe allergies, to reduce the possibility of complications. They will also have realistic expectations about what Dysport can do for them and how it can improve their natural appearance. If you have a skin infection on your face, a muscle or nerve condition, or if you are pregnant, this treatment may not be a safe option.

Preparation

We will give you personalized preparation instructions that will best prepare you for your Dysport treatment. These may include changes to the medications you take. During the week leading up to your treatment, you should avoid nicotine and alcohol, as these can lead to bruising near your injection sites. For the same reason, avoid blood-thinning substances like aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, and certain herbal supplements. You should also avoid excessive sun exposure to avoid sensitivity around your treatment area.

Dysport Procedure

At Allegro MedSpa, your Dysport treatment can be performed during your lunch break! You can leave and go on about your day immediately after you receive your injections. When you come in for your procedure, we will ask you to make various facial expressions using your upper face, such as squinting and frowning. This will allow us to mark the optimal injection sites. We will cleanse your treatment area and inject Dysport under the skin using a fine needle, followed by a cold compress to help decrease swelling and bruising. You can request a numbing cream to make the procedure more comfortable, but this is typically unnecessary. These procedures take about 10–15 minutes to complete.

Recovery

After your Dysport injection, you can return to your usual schedule. However, you should avoid strenuous activity for 24 hours to allow the formula to settle into your face. You can expect some swelling and bruising around your injection sites for the first couple of days. You should sleep with your head elevated on the first night to reduce swelling. Try not to touch your treatment area, as this can spread the Dysport material to other areas.

Results

It typically takes about seven to fourteen days for the full aesthetic effects of Dysport to become visible. These results generally last 3–6 months. (2) You can schedule follow-up appointments to receive additional injections and maintain your new look. If you are receiving Dysport as a preventive treatment, you may schedule visits further apart. You can also prolong your results by leading a healthy and active lifestyle, as well as avoiding excessive sun exposure, and keeping up with your skincare routine.

How Much Does Dysport Cost in Santa Rosa?

During your consultation, we will create your personal treatment plan and estimate your costs. FAQ

What is the difference between wrinkle relaxers and fillers?

Wrinkle relaxers (like Dysport) and wrinkle fillers (like Juvéderm® and Restylane®) are both treatments that improve the appearance of wrinkles and smooth fine lines. Dysport relaxes overused small facial muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles, like frown lines between the eyebrows, Crow’s feet (in the outer corners of the eyes), forehead wrinkles, and smile lines. Dermal fillers add volume under the skin to correct hollow areas and decrease fine lines throughout your face.

What’s the difference between BOTOX, Dysport, and Xeomin?

BOTOX, Dysport, and Xeomin are brands of injectable wrinkle relaxers that use botulinum toxin (type A). They all relax facial muscles to reduce dynamic wrinkles, but each formula is designed to suit specific areas and needs. There are subtle differences between them, including the amount in each dose, treatment spread, and length of results.

Is Dysport safe?

With proper care, Dysport rarely causes any complications. With that said, it is important to choose someone who has experience and training in handling this medication. A skilled injector will use just enough of the medication to effectively freeze the muscles that cause wrinkles while leaving nearby muscles unaffected.

Are Dysport injections painful?

Patients do not report abnormal discomfort during Dysport procedures. Patients can receive a numbing agent at their injection site to prevent pain.
