There’s Aging, and Then There Is Photoaging

Even the most dedicated sunscreen enthusiast will likely forget their sun protection sometimes, and most people don’t even realize just how vital sunscreen use is to the ongoing health and beauty of their skin. When we don’t protect ourselves thoroughly from the sun and its harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation, it causes photoaging. What is photoaging? Quite simply, it’s premature aging caused by exposure to UV, whether it is the sun or artificial sources such as tanning beds.

If you’re regretting all that time working on your tan, you’ll want to look into intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy. Learn more about our IPL in Santa Rosa and how it can help you look and feel your best.

If you are bothered by how your skin looks because of sun damage, fine lines, or dark spots, Allegro MedSpa of Santa Rosa can offer you a skin consultation at our office to see if you could benefit from IPL.

What’s the difference between photoaging and normal aging?

Each person has a unique natural aging process. Genetics and lifestyle are the major contributing factors to this aging process. Photoaging is premature aging directly caused by repeated exposure to UV. If you aren’t protecting yourself from the sun, you’re contributing to premature aging.

You may be thinking it doesn’t matter if you’re going to age anyway, but the difference between natural aging and photoaging can be drastic. Consider truck driver Bill McElligot, who made headlines in 2012 because his face is perhaps the single greatest advertisement for sunscreen.

Bill spent decades as a truck driver and it shows on his face. The left side of his face looks at least 20 years older than the right side. This is because of those years with the sun blasting through his driver’s door window. It wasn’t as if he was getting terribly sunburned every day, which is an important thing to keep in mind. Photoaging is not immediately visible, but the results are accumulative and can be severe.

How do you prevent photoaging?

The best way of preventing photoaging is by protecting yourself AT ALL TIMES from the sun. That means wearing SPF 30 sunscreen every day. And when we say every day, we do mean EVERY day. Is it cloudy outside? Put on your sunscreen. Are you staying inside all day? Put on your sunscreen.

We are always bombarded with UV whether it is from the sun or artificial sources. You may think you’re not getting any UV because you’re inside, but if you’re near windows you’re getting sun damage.

One great benefit of photofacials is their ability to reverse the signs of photoaging.
